About James Barber Tobacconists

Located in the North of England is James Barber Tobacconists, a business that was founded back in 1867 and is now in its fourth generation.

The business is one of the largest pipe and handmade cigar retailers outside of London with a 4,000 square foot shop. The shop sells a wide variety of tobacco products and giftware, specialising in those hard to find men’s gifts.

Project Detail

Centurius were commissioned to redesign and develop a new online ecommerce site for James Barber Tobacconists using the Actinic Ecommerce Software platform.

Custom plug-in were introduced to enhance the user experience with multi level navigation to cater for the multitude of users, whether simply browsing or easy access to a desired product in simply one click. Additional functionality was integrated into the site to allow effective visual appeal such as the mini slideshow gallery on the homepage, displaying the history of the family tree. As well as this a light box gallery was introduced to allow the client to add images of the shop as well as historical photography once again.

For the delivery options a comprehensive pricing structure was implemented with each product being assigned a specific weight category, thus giving the customer a true delivery cost instead of a more generalised figure.

For the product pages each had a unique up sell feature which advised the customer of other similar items on offer.
